LET’S TALK ABOUT BELLE IN THE FINALE SHALL WE, FANDOM.
What I’ve been seeing is basically that Belle doesn’t have a spine and the writers need to explain this stat because of how Belle reacted to Rumpelstiltskin when she remembered and that she said she loved him and hugged him rather than getting angry at him for the way he treated her back in FTL. Now, I agree that she has absolutely every right to be angry with him and this should be addressed but there are a couple of things to remember here:
• This finale was about a lot more than just these two. Their reunion was immensely satisfying for most us and in so many ways, Eddie and Adam had to give it to us lest it be completely disappointing to see them drop the ball like that (as they themselves admitted in a Q&A). But there was so much more going on and it waswonderful to see these two but obviously there is a lot more story to tell here and Kitsowitz knows it and they’ve out and out said they absolutely want to continue Belle and her story and character and relationship with Gold. Basing everything off two scenes that needed to be put in is unnecessarily jumping the gun and giving the writers no credit for the future.
• To be honest, Belle saying she loved him and hugging him upon remembering instead of slapping made a lot of sense for her character, imo. She seems the type of person to me, after realizing she’s lost 28 years of her life, to figure that anger and resentment and bitterness would get her nowhere and be a waste. Not to mention it was implied very heavily in her scene in Dreamy that she still loved Rumpelstiltskin and that she might have even gone back to him had Regina not kidnapped her. She is not the type to hold this grudge and I think it’s because she sees it as a waste of her energy and pointless to live like that.
This does not mean, however, that she is weak. There will undoubtedly be tension between her and Gold in season two. Just because we did not see it directly in this finale does not mean they are simply writing Belle off as a doormat. Plus it was pretty clear that Belle looked unimpressed by Gold bringing magic back as power since that was what drove them apart in the first place. I have no doubt Kitsowitz and the other writers will address this and it will not just be sunshine and roses for these two (as much as my little shipper heart will weep over the angst, it will be much more satisfying). Belle has been written as a strong character in the little we’ve seen of her so far and I don’t think the writers just intend to drop the ball on that. We’ve already seen Belle can stand her own ground against Rumpelstiltskin and I won’t be surprised if we see this from her again in S2. What will happen when she finds out about her father? There is a lot more there between them than just the reunion we were given which was a moment of pure emotion and appropriate for the context and circumstances but I’d be surprised if we didn’t see Belle perhaps lash out at Gold for all he’s done and that we will see tension and angst in S2 between these two.Because for a moment she thought he had finally changed and grew. He was able to reciprocate her love so easily this time which was a huge test for him. After the mistakes he’s made and how he lost her and blamed himself for her death, he finally has a second chance and he showed her that he was able to accept her love and return it this time. And Belle was undoubtedly elated by that in this moment. Then he had to go and pull his magic and power stunt and I don’t think she’ll be too happy with that come S2. But she did see this new side of him that she suspected he always had and I think the scenes we got were appropriate and made a lot of sense. She can kind of see now that she was right and he lived with his empty heart and his regret but they have another chance now and just as he doesn’t want to waste it or ruin it, neither does she. This does not mean she’ll take everything lying down though and I want to see her stand up to Gold for everything but the scenes we had of her in the finale did not display weakness, in my opinion.
There is so much story to tell between these two and I really look forward to it. Getting irrationally angry and criticizing a female character we admittedly know little about so far when we have absolutely no idea what S2 holds in story for us is just pointless to me. It’ll be interesting to see if they reveal how Belle was treated by Regina when she was held prisoner and if she knew she was simply being held as a pawn in a game and as leverage against Rumpelstiltskin. There is so much that can reveal why Belle reacted the way she did, other than the fact that she is brave and has a good heart. See? So much to uncover and find out and I absolutely cannot wait! Emile’s availability hopefully won’t make it too difficult but I have faith in these writers and that there is a lot more we’re going to be finding out.
Also I just stan Belle (and Emilie) hardcore and love her to bits and pieces and think she is flawless so I admit my bias as well. :D
It hurts but I’m not about to give you up…though broken my heart still beats it will not stop (x)

Rumpelstiltskin’s progression into a madman after losing Belle. It’s tragic but heartwarming all at once.

Now all his talks of love and that are 100 times worse, because you know he is still suffering from a broken heart.

Mr. Gold somehow still has the true love potion, and he’s going to somehow use it to get Belle back.
